What happens when 100 changemakers from around the world come together to transform their leadership?
That’s exactly what happened during my time with the Swedish Institute Leader Lab 2024. Over eight months, I connected with a diverse group of human rights leaders, learning new strategies and methodologies that have transformed my approach to advocacy. In this post, I’ll share how this experience reshaped my perspective and why it’s a valuable experience for any activist committed to creating lasting impact.
A special invitation
The excitement began as soon as I received my acceptance into the program. I was honored to be invited to the Swedish Embassy in Jordan, where I had the opportunity to meet the Swedish Deputy Head of Mission and other inspiring individuals who were participants in various Swedish Institute programs. This gathering was a powerful reminder of the vast network of changemakers and leaders who are working to make the world a better place. It also heightened my anticipation for the journey ahead.
A rewarding program
The program was thoughtfully designed to guide us through three crucial domains: leading change, leading advocacy, and leading collaboration. And since Advocacy is the core of my work at the Program of New Tactics, I thought I must be part of it. Through over 15 online sessions and an on-site meeting in Stockholm, we explored innovative tools and methodologies that enhanced our ability to lead effectively in complex environments.
What truly stood out to me was the warmth and dedication of the facilitation team. Their seamless collaboration, evident harmony, and unwavering support created a safe and inspiring space where every participant felt valued and included. The program’s organization was impeccable, balancing the complexity of hosting 100 leaders from vastly different cultural and professional backgrounds while ensuring everyone felt respected and engaged.
The selection process for the program was nothing short of brilliant. Each of the 100 participants brought a unique perspective, yet the synergy within the group felt effortless. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, with a genuine sense of belonging that underscored every interaction.
One of the most fulfilling moments of this journey was receiving my diploma at the end of the program.
This certificate wasn’t just a piece of paper—it was a testament to the dedication, time, and effort invested over those eight months. Every minute spent in the online sessions and on-site in Stockholm was worth it, culminating in a tangible achievement that I will cherish forever. As a trainer in human rights advocacy, this is the feeling I hope to impart to every one of my trainees.
A Peaceful Retreat in Sweden
The on-site meeting in Sweden was undoubtedly a highlight. The first part, held in a secluded and tranquil area surrounded by Sweden’s lush green landscapes, allowed us to disconnect from the hustle of everyday life and truly connect—with ourselves, with each other, and with nature. The peace of that setting set the tone for open dialogue, deep reflections, and authentic bonding among participants.
Final Reflections
As I reflect on this transformative experience, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a vibrant and inspiring global community.
The Swedish Institute Leader Lab 2024 has left an indelible mark on me, both personally and professionally. It reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of inclusivity in leadership. As I move forward in my journey, I carry with me not only the tools and methodologies we learned, but also the invaluable connections and memories made along the way.
Here’s to leading change, advocating for what matters, and building bridges across the world—one meaningful step at a time.
