Who knew that fateful day when New Tactics in Human Rights gave me an opportunity to work with them was the moment when they would become my very important family for the next three years? Having the privilege to be the intern that has spent the most time with them, ever, (I know, some may question my dubious decision making skills), I have gained worlds of knowledge and matured beyond expectations.

Omar Altabakha is the MENA initiative Lead Trainer with CVT’s New Tactics in Human Rights.

Sulaimaniya in Iraqi Kurdistan is a place like no other. While on my recent visit to Sulaimaniya, residents raised Kurdish flags on top of their houses in support of an independence referendum. Residents speak their own Kurdish language and wear traditional Kurdish attire out in the streets.

New Tactics in Human Rights, a program of the Center for Victims of Torture, has primarily focused its work on supporting human rights activists outside the U.S. over the past sixteen years. However, the changing political climate in the U.S. is inspiring new advocacy efforts to protect and promote rights. To be as effective as possible in 2017 and beyond, we believe it is critical that activists focus on building their strategic and tactical capacity.
